Each school year brings many opportunities for my students and I to learn together! I am a fourth year teacher, eager to face the challenges and reap the rewards of teaching in a public school. My kiddos come from a background of high poverty. We are a Title 1 school, and almost 75% of our population qualifies for free or reduced price lunch. Despite these challenges, our school has been rated "Excellent" by the state of Ohio.
Many of my students come to school without full bellies, supplies, or educational background knowledge.
Still, what they do come to school with each day is priceless: a strong desire to learn and grow. As a teacher, I not only provide them with content knowledge, but school supplies, a developing love of learning, and sometimes, even their basic needs.
In each one of my students, I see great potential and endless possibilities. By helping with this project, you're helping my students reach their many goals!
My Project
On the first week of school, I give each of my students a blank piece of paper and ask them to draw a scientist. Year after year, my kiddos draw very similar pictures; to them, a "scientist" is portrayed as a Caucasian male with wild hair, holding some sort of bubbling beaker and wearing a white lab coat. After discussing our pictures, I tell them I have a picture of my favorite scientists...and present a picture of the class! They kids giggle, and are always sure that they are NOT scientists. Each year, it's my goal to change their views by showing them that yes, my six and seven years old are amazing scientists discovering new things about our world every day.
My firsties owl-ways love learning more about animals in science class!
This fall, I hope to lead a full exploration about one of our Ohio-native nocturnal animals, the owl. We'll spend all week learning about the habitat, body parts, and characteristics of owls, and end the week by dissecting owl pellets. The pellets will help us learn more about owls' digestive system and diet. It is also an amazing opportunity for my students to take part in a hands-on experiment and build their fine motor skills.
I have requested large owl pellets, magnifying glasses, kid-friendly tweezers, and a non-fiction text for our unit study. I have carefully selected products that are rated excellent in quality. Thank you for considering a donation to my classroom.
