Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at an inner city high school, ranked one of the lowest performing schools in CT. We no longer have electives or after school activities. The only supplies allotted are two reams of copy paper per month (less than 2 sheets/student/week). Lack of self-worth isn't just something you can see in a young person's eyes. You can feel it in a classroom, and it intensifies as students grow older and begin to believe that the lack of funding in their district - which they see when they compare their own school to the schools they visit during away games - means that society has determined investing in their potential is not worth the dollars. This lack of self-worth further propels a cycle of underperforming and underfunding, thus contributing to a community-wide cycle as students join generations of adults who have already learned the same lesson." My kids may appear tough, but they just need love and someone to believe in them and their potential. Over 30% of Bridgeport's children live below the poverty line, many of my students live in public housing, shelters, or on the streets. 100% of my students are eligible for free or reduced lunch programs.
My Project
Student engagement is a huge issue at my school. Our school graduation rate was 60% last year. In CT one in five students are not engaged in school. This is a huge problem and must be addressed. This summer I researched ways to engage students in their learning and discovered escape room challenges! We need the combination locks, secret spy kits, locked boxes, invisible ink, UV light, time capsules, spy games, and decoder kits to plan escape room challenges for science principles. Students will use science knowledge to answer questions to gain the next clue. "When children are having fun they want to be involved and the learning occurs naturally."
I am so excited to plan challenges and get my students engaged in their learning.
I am planning on using escape rooms instead of unit exams and plan on making learning fun! Mr. Rogers stated, "Play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning."
