Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Students often don't get as much science instruction prior to middle school, and I need assistance getting materials that will assist in bridging the gap that exists for a lot of our students. I personally remember being shocked at the jump in vocabulary, expectations, and requirements, despite having an amazing 5th grade science teacher prior to entering 6th. ELAR/Math are primary focuses, so sometimes science gets put on the back burner or, they just do a "fun" activity and kids don't actually internalize what they are learning during a lab.

My goal is to provide tangible examples of topics covered, and thankfully some of the materials we would need are provided by the campus, however we tend to do a lot of drawing, color coding, and I have found we may have little to none provided at the rate 6th grade can go tend to go through, as we are also always teaching proper, reasonable use of things.

For example, despite my demonstration of 5 dots, or glue goes around the perimeter only, we go through glue sticks like they are nothing! Primarily due to misuse on the students end, or my students that need something to do with their hands, they will sometimes tear apart a glue stick or other materials, hence the fidget toys/stress balls!

Aside from snacks for tutoring, most materials are to improve internalization of the content being taught by allowing hands on interactions, such as the Newton's cradles, those are great for not only demonstrating our standards on Newton's laws, but also on standards for energy transformation -- most things on my list can be used for more than one standard to also help demonstrate how these topics are foundations of the world around us!
