Science Class is Going Green!

My students need composition books, glue sticks, tape, and pencils for use in science class.

This project expired on October 31, 2017.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom begins with students asking for a pencil. Then a few more ask for paper. Students in my district are required to keep Interactive Science Notebooks. Most of my students do not come to school with a composition book to use as an Interactive Notebook.

My students are some of the most economically disadvantaged in the state.

However, this does not hinder their spirit and desire to learn. Many of their parents have to make choices between essential needs, like food and electricity, and forgo school supplies. I am grateful that Donors Choose exists so that I can write a proposal to try to meet their needs for school supplies. I am also their Science teacher, and I want to lead by example when it relates to the 3 R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. These supplies teach students to complete the triangle. That is, to buy recycled products. All of the school supplies requested are made from recycled materials. They are a lesson in conservation, too!

My Project

The students will use the composition books, tape, glue sticks, and lead pencils for their basic back to school needs in science class. When the students enter class on the first day, I plan to give them the school supplies and teach a lesson about going green and the use of recycled products. The composition books made from recycled products will be used as their Interactive Notebooks. The recycled mechanical pencils will be used for writing in those notebooks and will last a long time with no need for sharpening. The glue sticks and tape will be used to secure handouts, foldables, and specimens in their notebooks.

This project will impact my students in many positive ways.

First, they will have adequate basic supplies for learning. Second, they will know that someone cares about them and wants them to have things they need for school. Finally, they will put conservation into practice. They will truly be Going Green in Science Class!
