Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are very special. Several of them have special needs and some have other behavioral challenges due to experiencing some level of trauma. Over 75 percent of our students live in poverty. Many of our students either currently are or have been homeless at some point, which is truly devastating. We also have a high percentage of students who are brand new to the country and don’t speak a word of English.
My grade level changes almost every year, and because of our population, I tend to purchase a lot of our classroom supplies.
Whatever puts a smile on their faces makes me happy! My goal is to make their six hours of school time as special as it can be. They are always grateful for the love and support they get, which is why I am always looking for ways to improve my instruction! I get a lot of hugs here!
My Project
We have a very high percentage of children from poverty. Many are immigrants brand new to the country. Several have experienced trauma. My own biological children come home with a school supply list for the following year and we make our trip to different stores to gather all the supplies we need for them to have a successful school year. I can not ask my students families to do the same because most of them simply can not afford it.
These school supplies are the basic necessities they need to have a productive school year.
Pencils, erasers, pencil cases, paper, scissors, and glue sticks are the fundamentals for any classroom and due to budget cuts are not usually supplied by the school. My students need these supplies in order to be successful.
