School Community Garden-Go for Launch

My Project

Our mainly urban/suburban middle school students yearn to be supported with opportunities that stretch their learning beyond the classroom. Fully launching our Community School Garden with the two Glanzend 8 x 16 ft polycarbonate greenhouses will provide opportunities to extend our growing season, connect with nature, to learn how to be responsible land stewards, to develop awareness of the seed to harvest growing cycle, and to make healthy food choices. The school has recently completed a full composting program and this project allows for our students to be further involved in the full circle of providing and caring for one another. Hands-on learning in our new outdoor garden classrooms will offer multiple ways to learn real world skills, reconnecting our students with the pastoral roots of their town.

By launching our school community garden project, we are giving our students an opportunity to develop skills to assure that they will be better able to support one another when families and peers need healthy but increasingly expensive food options.

This outdoor garden classroom will also foster a sense of community while developing a farm-to-table experience. Our current raised bed gardens, a soft-launch of an experimental garden this past spring, will expand beyond just pumpkins and potatoes to allow for an extended growing season, where a large number of edible crops can now be started and sheltered from the harsh and cold Maine spring. Not only will our students learn about agriculture and teamwork, they will be acquiring a skill set that will serve them for the rest of their lives.

This garden will be used by the entire school community. We will grow and then transfer our produce to our students and staff to taste our own fresh veggies and fruits.
