Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"If one cannot enjoy reading a book over and over again, there is no use in reading it at all"-Oscar Wilde. My students are struggling to find that one book that could latch them into a lifetime of reading and would greatly benefit in having a listening center as a part of our daily small groups.

Our school is located in a high-poverty area where the scholars don't get nearly enough opportunities to delve into high-interest literature, so this would give them what they crave: access to more books.

The scholars in my classroom love a daily read-aloud, and so far we have read several Louis Sachar books. They are captivated and can't wait for the next reading adventure. Our classroom library is limited, and only offers a meager selection. For my classroom community, predominantly composed of English learners, they need ample practice in school and at home. Daily, these scholars rotate through learning centers targeted to hone their reading and writing skills. However, they have yet to have the opportunity to explore high-interest literature in listening centers during our small-group rotation. This project will grant them their wish for more books, and spark them to continue their reading at home.

My Project

My scholars will explore in small groups of four, several high-interest books including the first four books in the Magic Tree House series, life science books about animals my scholars are intrigued by, and math books that incorporate multiple-subjects into the core literature they will read. Scholars will utilize our stereo and headphones to listen to a reader read these stories, set an example of fluency, expression, and accuracy, and read along. After, the scholars will engage in discussion as they write about the story. These stories are set to hook my scholars to become voracious readers of both fiction and nonfiction text and bridge them to read more. The Magic Tree House Collection will provide the independent readers the opportunity to continue reading past the four books they will read in small groups.

Personally, I have kept many of the books I collected as a child, which have ended up in the hands of my students, due to a lack of high-interest books.

Needless to say, these books have seen better days. My scholars have few examples of current, high-interest literature that don't display signs of wear-and-tear. Please assist them in their quest for literature.
