My Students

The demographics of the students I serve are pretty diverse. In Morganton, NC we have a good-sized population of Hispanic students along with non-Hispanic and also African-Americans. In any case, no matter the ethnicity of my students, they are incredibly diverse in their socioeconomic levels and also learning levels. The proportion of female to male students is about 50/50.

Unlike most middle school classes, I give students the opportunity to use industrial machines in order to build real-world skills.

I am trained in technology education and am also a Project Lead The Way educator. The classroom I am in was once the industrial technology class, now turned engineering technology and project-based learning class.

The students I serve are special to me because they are the future of the town I live in and the world. I believe it is incredibly important to instill in these students a sense of ownership, good work ethic, ingenuity, and a do-it-yourself mentality. I hope that after students come out of my classroom they can lead a better, more sustainable life and in the end, save themselves money by doing things themselves.

My Project

The projects we do in my 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes deal heavily with designing and modelling prototypes. There needs to be an ability to properly draw and measure things to communicate ideas that students come up with. Many of the projects involve drawing multi-view sketches and also oblique drawings in which lines need to be straight and correct measurements.

Students in my design and modelling classes have been using architectural scales and drawing triangles that have been in this classroom since when it was a drafting and woods shop class in 1989.

The scales are badly scarred and the 16th scale is not legible on many. Students are not allowed to draw using the scales, only the triangles and all of our triangles are mangled to the point that I'm having to epoxy them together and ignore jagged lines because of the many broken sides on the triangles.
