I am a Bilingual teacher at Cleveland Elementary School. I teach Spanish to 14 students in Kindergarten and 18 students in first grade on a half-day basis. The class population is 40% English native speakers and 60% Spanish native speakers. The Dual-Language Program began five years ago in our school. The program has been very successful. The students and parents are very excited because they have the opportunity to become bilingual. Our students are from very low-income families. Ninety percent of our students are on free or reduced lunch. As an educator today, one is faced with some difficult challenges and one of them is to make sure that the students succeed academically and meet the standards. I work hard with my students, so they could succeed. One of the many important things for our students is to provide them with a variety of activities. It is very crucial to develop vocabulary, listening, speaking and writing skills. When we read books, we discuss about the author and illustrator. We talk about the importance of being authors and illustrators and we encourage them to write. My students love to make books and we do not have the appropriate materials to make them. We want to be able to display the books they make in the classroom so the other students could read each other’s books. We not only make books for the classroom but we also make books for some school activities. We organize activities for the parents where the children will read books made by them. We have activities such as; “Muffin for Moms” , “Donuts for Dad” where we invite the parents and the students read the books they make. The books we usually make, are made with paper and construction paper and they do not last long. If we could make books with a durable material, we will have the opportunity to keep the books in the class and the students will have books to read. Our project needs a binding machine and covers so we can make books. We know that our students will benefit from reading books, especially if the books are made by them.
