Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach English Language Arts to 9th graders in Kansas City. My students come from a variety of backgrounds and live in a community with no ethnic majority. In fact, there are more than 70 languages represented in my district. My district's vision is to create experiences for 9th graders that are significantly different than their K-8 grade years.
My students love being able to work on project-based and cross-curricular projects in a space where they are empowered to pursue their learning goals.
The experiences I help provide my students are all aimed at preparing them for whatever their future holds. All of it starts with having a strong classroom environment where collaboration and communication are at the center. Many of my students are working towards a level of education that no one in their family has yet to achieve.
My Project
To make learning more personal for my students, I want my classroom to have seating options that help them feel comfortable and welcome. Having seating options in my classroom like bean bags and high-top stools will add variety to the environment and create a more home-like feel. While I incorporate multiple opportunities for students to work collaboratively, I want them to have multiple options for where they work so that they are comfortable.
Last year, I had many students who wanted to move away from the tables and chairs and sit either on the floor or on the one stool I had close to the window.
Getting fully funded for this project means that I will be able to increase the options my students have for their seating arrangements. My overall goal is to make my classroom more inviting and give my students the feeling that they can take more ownership of what they do in our classroom.
Specifically, I envision students sitting or standing at the Flash Furniture Bar Height Table to work on projects, converse, or just have a break from the usual chairs and tables in the rest of the room. My classroom also has a corner with a big window where I'm planning to place the four Big Joe Cube bean bags and their ottomans. They will provide a very comfortable place to read or work on projects and the ottomans also function as seats so it will double the available seating in case a bigger group wants to sit there. These two seating options provide a lot of versatility and I'm excited to see how else my students will want to use them.
