Satisfying Sensory Needs Means More Focused Kids

My Students

This year I may have a class of up to 24 transitional kindergartners. All of my students come from low-income families who qualify for the free lunch program. Our school is located in an inner-city neighborhood and hosts a multiculturally diverse group of families.

Though my students may not have much monetarily, they have the same wide-eyed, eager-to-learn attitude typical of children this age.

They love coming to school and they love learning new things. My hope is to provide them with the tools and resources they need to build a strong foundation of skills that will help them throughout their years in school.

My Project

This year I have a large number of students with very high sensory needs that are affecting their ability to focus in the classroom. They have a hard time staying in one place, keeping their hands and feet to themselves, paying attention, focusing on a task, and they put most everything in their mouths.

I am requesting sensory products that have been proven to help children who have similar needs to mine.

The weighted blanket and sensory pillow will be used in our quiet spot where children go to calm down. The chair bands will be used when they sit at tables to help keep them at their seats. The wobble cushions will help them to stay seated, either on a chair or on the carpet. The chew necklaces will give my students something safe to chew on rather than putting markers and other objects in their mouths. The stretchy string fidgets will give their hands something to do when we are on the carpet or when they're doing work at the tables. The noise cancelling earmuffs will be used whenever my students show sensitivity to noise. All of these products will hopefully help soothe my students, and keep them calmer and more focused.
