My beautiful, enthusiastic kindergrtners attend a Title I inner city public school. They are an ethnically diverse group of students--African American, Latino, and Asian--who come from low-income families. My students are like any other 4- and 5-year olds, with a thirst for learning. However, most of their academic support comes from school, as they have language barriers or other life issues that consume their personal lives. Less than 5% of my students' parents have attended or are attending college, and some of them are uncomfortable with helping their children with academics at home. My students' lives revolve primarily around their neighborhood and local events. Many have never been to a public library, educational museum, or theater for cultural events. They have little exposure to technology in their homes or their lives, other than watching t.v. and playing video games. School is their exposure to the world.
