Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students face challenges that boggle the mind. Living in a high poverty zone affects every aspect of learning. Our school has 100% free breakfast and lunch. Some students return home daily to an empty home where they lock themselves in until parents arrive-- sometimes late at night or arrive at the school gates as early as 6:00 am and stay in the after school program until 5 or 6 PM.
Others are homeless, silently arriving at school daily, silently keeping to themselves, never knowing where they will be sleeping, hoping that no-one notices the same clothes, sometimes dirty, sometimes torn, sometimes just not warm enough.
Others are more fortunate having parents working in higher end jobs that allow them some of the more basic necessities of life. Yet, few have access to the level of support they need.
This year I have a combination class of 4th and 5th graders. Some are reading as low as 1st grade.
Every child wants to learn, wants to succeed. The majority of my students start the school year reading at the 3rd-grade level. The majority leave reading on grade level or above. These students treasure the ability to expand their potential.
My Project
A Samsung tablet, available for all, will help my students have a valuable research tool handy at their desk. Students will be able to quickly research facts and information as they come up in discussions.
Imagine having information available at your fingertips.
My students often have questions during discussions that require that they check resources. Yet, because of lack of resources, they only have access to technology twice a week. The frustrations of not being able to check facts and statistics easily and quickly hinders successful discussions and explorations. Large post it notes make it easy to share information with classmates, as well as, allow them to record their ideas and comments.
