The Manchester School District is the state's largest and oldest school system. The district consists of 14 elementary schools, four middle and four high schools. There are over 15,000 students in the district.
Manchester schools have a very diverse population including more than 1500 English Language Learners.
Many of the schools are considered Title I schools with at least 40% of the students receiving free and/or reduced lunch.
The majority of my students live in poverty and have experienced several Adverse Childhood Experiences/Trauma (A.C.E.S.). These A.C.E.S. create many challenges for my students including regulating their emotions, awareness of coping skills, learning and developing appropriate relationships with others.
My Project
My middle school students eagerly want to learn how to run and have been asking me to start a running group. I am an athlete that participates in many races a year to promote my own mental and physical well-being which has inspired my students. Last year, my students received parent permission to run and I received administrative permission to teach my students how to run and help them prepare for local races.
These pedometers will allow my students to track individual data.
We will also be using a Coach to 5K running plan since all of my students are beginners. Following a plan and using pedometers will help prevent injuries and promote motivation (none of my students are able to afford pedometers which will be left at school). Water bottles will be given to each student and will remain at school so I teach them proper hydration for their weight and activity level. Water consumption will be promoted through the day and tracked in addition to mileage.
