I teach two different classes each day; one class of second graders and one class of third graders. They are a great group of students who truly enjoy school. They love being read to and especially love learning about people from history.
My students attend a neighborhood school with more than 50 countries represented in our student population.
The students come from extremely diverse backgrounds. Many of them are refugees or immigrants. My students have a great thirst for knowledge. They really love learning about history and the world around them. Many of my students gravitate toward the nonfiction section of my classroom library and they love studying about famous people.
My Project
A fun and exciting part of our writing curriculum is when my classroom gets to read and learn about poetry! My students read a variety of poems and learn to write their own poetry. Poetry is a form of writing so important to children at this age. The more diverse poems I can make available to my class, the better!
Many children who struggle with conventional writing actually thrive when writing poetry!
Poems have less constrictions than formal writing and inspire children's creativity. Poetry encourages students to use their senses and see the world around them! Reading and writing poems also helps young writers to understand their feelings. Please help me put great books of poetry into the hands of my students.
