My Project

My students will be designing and building roller coasters out of card stock, tape, and other household items. Their objective is to utilize their knowledge of Motion, Speed, Acceleration, Energy, Force, Inertia, Momentum, and Newton’s 3 Laws to create a roller coaster that can carry a marble for the longest period of time without stopping. This is a higher level thinking skill set that pushes them to apply their science knowledge in their design and construction. These materials are the basics for building their final product.

All of our 8th graders have the opportunity to go to Magic Mountain at the end of the school year, and by doing this project, it allows them to see what an engineer does when they design and construct a roller coaster.

My students will use creativity and science to get a taste of one of their favorite past times of going to an amusement park.
