The students in my classroom are as diverse as the community in which they live and the school in which they attend. Each student has been diagnosed with various disabilities including autism, mental illness, emotional and behavior disorders, cognitive and developmental delays, which impede their ability to learn in a general education classroom. Many of my students come from hectic environments and are victims of poverty and abuse. However, they are resilient, eager to learn and proud when they do achieve their goals. The district in which I teach is a very poor school that receives the majority of its funds from the state, which requires the staff to jump through hoops in order to receive the valuable state funding.
My Project
If my “Rockin' Readers” project is fully funded I plan to create guided reading groups by the second week of the 2018/19 school year. The books I am requesting will allow me to set up a library that meets the needs of all my students, Kindergarten to Fifth grade, along with providing each student a rich literacy experience.
Research shows that using guided reading with students with disabilities (moderate to intense needs), showed growth in their literacy skills and greater independence (Guided Reading with Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders).
The guided reading books will be used daily by each student so that they can work on meeting the ultimate goal of independent reading. The problem solving skills learned from the guided reading process is crucial in developing important foundational concepts that will generalize in other areas of academics. The materials requested will be life changing to my students and allow them to have a successful academic career.
