I am a special education teacher at low income/high poverty Title I school. I currently work with second through fifth-grade students who qualify for Special Education services and are on Individualized Education Plans. The majority of these students receive free and reduced lunches.
Five of the students I serve are dual-enrolled in the English Language Learner program meaning that along with learning academic subjects, they are trying to learn English.
This makes it difficult to master basic English and reading concepts and instructional vocabulary due to the intensive language requirements. All of the students qualify for special education in the areas of Other Health Impaired, Cognitive Disabilities, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Emotional Behavioral Disorders, or Specific Learning Disabilities.
The students I support in reading, math, and writing are at least two grade levels behind their grade level peers. I have four students who are still working on mastering first-grade concepts. These students require a hands-on and engaging approach to all instruction.
My Project
Our school district purchased a wonderful new literacy curriculum for students K-5 that teaches phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. We began implementing the program this year and we realized that we do not have the materials necessary to create the most engaging practice components for our students.
We are requesting Astrobrights card stock to print games, sight word cards, sorts, and practice activities for our students.
The students are very excited to have their own sets of flashcards and personalized games.
Unfortunately our current paper cannot hold up to their eager and enthusiastic learning. We printed as many copies of the games and flashcards on white card stock as we can, but we quickly depleted our supply. The bright colored card stock that we are requesting will correlate with the three levels of the literacy curriculum and further engage our eager learners!
