Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our FIRST Robotics Team competes annually in the FIRST Robotics Competition. However, we face some stiff competition. While other teams use futuristic techniques like water blasting, and laser cutting, we are forced to resort to primitive hacksaws and screwdrivers. For us to grow, this must change.

Our students are united only in their passion.

Coming from a diverse range of cultures and communities, they work together to create something truly amazing. For six weeks, they work together every day in what is most aptly described as an oversized closet, applying math and science principle to construct behemoth robots. However, our students are by no means limited to math and science. On any given day, you might find them teaching a class to elementary school students, designing and selling T-Shirts to raise funds, building their very own xylophone out of PVC pipe, or filming videos that promote technology education and proficiency.

My Project

Currently, all robot construction is done using hand drills and hacksaws. This is unsafe, inaccurate, and inefficient. With a drill press, we could safely and accurately cut pieces in a matter of moments, rather than expending several hours of valuable time making painstakingly precise measurements. We believe that the true value of students building a robot lies in what they learn about engineering principles and design, and the amount of time we spend doing manual labor drastically reduces the amount of time we can spend teaching them more lofty and complex topics.

Our students are fighting an uphill battle.

They have no professional assistance and are competing against teams with engineers from the likes of NASA, Ford, and GM on call. We do not have a machine shop on campus, so they must use their incredible ingenuity instead. While their creative "workarounds" to lacking the proper equipment are impressive, it's far past time they start worrying less about drilling straight and more about the physics involved in making a robot sink free-throws.
