The New York State Global History and Geography Regents exam tests students on material they learned in a two-year course. The exam covers just about everything in human history, so you can imagine how much material there is to study!
My students are incredible young women.
They are willing to work hard to be successful and also admit to slacking off when their teenage habits get the best of them. As 10th graders, they know that they are facing 3 New York State regents exams at the end of the year that will determine their graduating. As students at a Math and Science school for girls, most of the 10th graders already have fulfilled state requirements in these fields. The Global History and Geography exam has proved to be a difficult exam for minority students and the 11th grade class at the school. Many of my students have demonstrated that flashcards help them retain the overwhelming amount of historical content the course has to offer.
Since many of my students have demonstrated flash cards as a useful study strategy, I hope to help them create and maintain study resources throughout the year that will help them prepare for the Global History and Geography Regents Exam. Each unit students will use index cards to study for unit test, but to also save for regents review at the end of the year. Students will use the duct-tape and card-stock to create a convenient and fun case for their index cards. Many of my students have long commutes to and from school, so hopefully having the cases will encourage my students to study during these commutes. They will also help them stay organized, a skill that will help them maintain other areas of their lives.
My students are determined to succeed on their regents exams, graduate high school and go on to college and make their marks on the world.
First things first, they have to pass these exams, which has proved difficult. The passing rate for the Global History exam is low for minority students. I hope that this review strategy will help them conquer this exam, so they can feel confident in the face of any of life's other obstacles.
