This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is predominantly comprised of low income Puerto Rican and Dominican families living in Holyoke, MA. These are some of the most resilient students ever, many of them face disenfranchisement and trauma on a daily basis but persevere to pursue their education. At our school, we provide a rigorous, standards-aligned education in a trauma informed setting. Our specials classes, including our music program, allow our students to engage in life changing opportunities to explore creative outlets.

My Project

The Bongo Drums will be for our lessons on Latin percussion and will be used alongside a set of congas.

Boomwhackers and hand bells are a great tool to develop students' sense of pitch and scale.

They also allow for practicing ensemble coordination and music reading skills.

The strings are to be used with our newly donated class set of ukuleles, as well as a set of guitars I have been able to gather together for our classroom. Learning to play an instrument like the guitar or ukulele can change a child's life. In our classroom we will be using our instruments as tools for social emotional learning and will be working on writing songs on them that expressed our emotions and feelings.
