Revised Graphing Calculators That Talk

We need these graphing calculators to complete High School math standards.

About My Students

I work with a diverse population of extremely bright Mathematicians who are excelling at High School Math One and they are just middle school students! These 70 students share 7 graphing calculators. I would like the students to be able to have one calculator per pair of students and rotate taking the calculator home to expand their learning.

These Eighth-grade students are eager learners and will be our future scientists, engineers, programmers, and mathematicians. Investing in them now will help us all out in the future.

These amazing Middle School Math Students are excelling at High School Math standards without the necessary tools and they really need your help. Watching the movie Hidden Figures and seeing the "computers" and watching my students do the computations and graphing without the use of available technology seems like we have gone back in time. My students deserve the tools they need. I created a Donors Choose project for 32 graphing calculators and had 20 donations, but could not obtain total funding. I am hoping the donations will be reassigned to this downsized project. I have $495 of my money that will go to this project.

The skills used are learning the differences of a function with a change in the domain or range both exponentially and linear. We will also be able to graph systems of equations and quadratics.

In Their Own Words

With this project we are trying to get ten graphing calculators to add to our 7 current calculators. We share one calculator with 5 students. Seventeen will give us one calculator per pair. Seventeen calculators will allow us to visually see the mathematical equations that we solve. By seeing it visually, we are able to realize how math is part of our everyday life. Many times it takes a really long time to make these graphs, which is why we need the graphing calculators so we can manipulate the equations. We will learn how to use the buttons and show and explain how to our classmates.

Not only did my friend and I write up this project, but we brought it to our teacher. She has already purchased six graphing calculators on her own and one was a gift, but she can't afford a class set all by herself. We thought we could help by reaching out to Donors choose. We will monitor the project and update the class about its progress. When it gets funded, we will be in charge of unpacking the boxes, setting up the calculators, numbering them, and then we will be the first to use them!

This project is SO important. Math equations are one thing, but we are beyond that. We are actually applying our math skills to real world problems. In order to help us see the equations quickly and to manipulate data, we need graphing calculators. This project will solve that challenge, but it will also make us more college and career ready. We will be thinking critically, applying our thinking skills, and extending what the textbook has to offer.
