Restock Our Book Shelves

My students need 10 copies each of the novels "Out of the Dust" and "The Misfits".

Our urban middle school serves a diverse population where many of the families have difficulty making ends meet. A large potion of my students lack any type of reading material at all in the home, so the literature we expose them to at school is of great importance. Lucky for us, what our students lack in material wealth, they make up for in creativity and enthusiasm. Two novels which teachers at our school choose time and time again to share with their classes are "Out of the Dust" by Karen Hesse and "The Misfits" by James Howe. These novels both speak about the difficulties of being a teenager ad well as how to deal with conflict and difficult times. Though the main characters of these novels are from different time periods, they both speak to our students in a very special way. While the importance of the lessons these novels teach makes them extremely valuable on their own, it's our hope that they will become part of a new collaborative Author Study that we are in the process of creating. This unit will include not only other books written by both of these amazing authors, but nonfiction links i addition to connections toward art and music. In addition to the literary aspects that these books teach our students, each of these books also teach important elements of both U.S. history, civics, and government. Time has, unfortunately, taken its toll on our school sets of these books. This is no surprise since each set must be shared by the entire school. Many teachers have requested that these novels be replaced, but our school simply does not have the funds at this time. If we could obtain just ten copies of each book, we could replace those novels that are extremely worn out and have a complete class set so that we may continue to expose future classes to these amazing books for years to come.
