Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I public school in Washington, D.C. 99% of our students are eligible for free lunch, and many of them are English language learners. Several of our students are newcomers to the U.S., learning English for the first time while adjusting to life in a brand new place. The diverse backgrounds and native languages of our learners are assets to our vibrant community, and I continue to see students love and support each other both in and outside of the classroom.
My students are empathetic, inquisitive, and creative.
I am constantly blown away by their ability to grapple with important issues and look for solutions, whether it is writing a letter to Congress, or inventing a new way to do something in our classroom maker space. My students desire to ask big questions, find the information they need, and take action making our learning community an energizing and inspiring place to be.
My Project
In order to become stronger readers, writers, and thinkers, my students need access to high-quality and engaging books. In addition to having a wide variety of titles to choose from, it is imperative that a great classroom library is filled with books that reflect students' cultures, identities, and experiences.
I am seeking to build a classroom library that represents the unique cultural identities of students in and outside of my classroom.
By being able to choose from books with a wide representation of content, characters, and authors, students will have more opportunities to connect to the stories they read. They will also build a reading life, gaining insight and expertise in which types of books they enjoy most. Finally, a diverse library will give students a window to understand the lives of others.
In order to curate my library selections, I used the Teacher's College Reading and Writing Project's Diverse Book List 2019-2020. I hope that access to these books will spark my students' love of reading, open doors to new ideas, and affirm their sense of belonging in our school community.
