This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year has been incredibly challenging for the amount of cell phone use in the classroom. Cell phones cause such a disruption to learning and being present for our students. I've tried rewarding good cell phone behavior, calling home, and taking cell phones away from students.

However, I was recently reading about a successful program at a high school in Washington State that has students turn their phones in at the beginning of the period and pick them up on their way out of the classroom.

I would like to create a similar setup for my students. Each of my tables holds 4 students and a charging station will be assigned to each table, away from the students. This will encourage them to put their phones in the stations because they will be charged and they won't be able to distract them because their phones are not on them.

Cell phones really worry me and I've tried many different techniques and I would like to create an environment where students see the importance of not having the distraction of the phones and how it impacts their success.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
