Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students in my classroom often find reading to be very difficult and stressful. They are ESL learners and generally, do not have reading support at home. Often times they share their homes with extended family and I often hear there is a lack of a quiet space to dive into a good book.

The students in my classroom are mainly Hispanic children of new immigrant families.

My students often do not have many books at home in their native language or English. My classroom will be 100% on free/reduced lunch as our area is a highly low income area.

My Project

My students often share that their home life can be chaotic with extended family living together and numerous cousins and younger siblings sharing a small living spaces. My students love to take books home to read, but they find their homes too distracting to concentrate, so many prefer to read at school. Our reading corner is an important place where I want students to find their passion for reading.

I'd like to provide them with a reading corner that is their own piece of the world through literature!

I think that having colorful bean bags will bring a comfortable place that students will want to go to sit and read their stresses away through a good book. I think that as this reading corner comes alive and students make it their own, it will open the door to creating lifelong readers.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
