This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Stop a minute, right where you are...Tell that imperious voice in your head to be still" Barbara Kingsolver. My students have had at least 4 years of learning that they are stupid, dumb, and cant learn. My first objective is to help them quite those negative voices and realize their full potential.

My students all come from low income urban environments.

Prior to being referred to my classroom, many were considered incapable of learning to read. My classroom is a temporary setting where they can focus on improving their reading, writing, and math abilities. Especially at the beginning of the year, my students have very low self esteem and a negative self image because of their poor academic performance. As they improve throughout the year, their confidence levels skyrocket and It feels like I have a whole new set of students.

My Project

After dealing with so many years of academic difficulties and learning directly or indirectly that they are stupid and incapable of learning, it is up to me to help them let go of their anxiety and misguided beliefs. By donating a classroom set of yoga mats, you will be helping my students let go of their baggage and start their mornings feeling calm and relaxed. My two instructional aids and I have been leading the class yoga session first thing in the morning for the past month, and I have seen improvements in both their anxiety levels and the amount of time it takes them to get focused on the day's lessons.

While we love the way yoga makes us feel, we neither love how the classroom carpet smells when our faces are so close to it, nor do we like how the scratchy fibers feel against our skin.

By donating a classroom set of yoga mats, we will be able to focus on calming our minds rather than getting distracted by the carpet's smell and texture. The mats will also provide a more hygienic environment since I can control how often they are cleaned.
