Through our new books, students are learning how to use context clues to understand unfamiliar words, make inferences using evidence from the text, identify character traits, and analyze how characters develop throughout a story. These lessons are helping students become more thoughtful, confident, and engaged readers.\r\n\r\nReading is a special part of our classroom community. We enjoy reading aloud together as a whole group, pausing to discuss focus questions, share predictions, and explore important events in the story. Students engage in meaningful conversations where they explain their thinking, listen to different points of view, and support their ideas with evidence from the text. We also complete vocabulary activities that help students understand and use new words to build their comprehension and language skills.\r\n\r\nOne of the most rewarding parts of this project has been seeing students become excited about reading and eager to participate in discussions. Even students who are sometimes hesitant to share are starting to contribute their ideas and make connections with characters. It is amazing to see their confidence grow as readers and thinkers. On average, I had approximately 18 students come in weekly to participate and share their ideas. We engaged in varying activities ranging from mental health presentations to feeling charades to art activities -- all of which were generally initiated by the students. \r\n\r\nMental health club was a space where the students were able to have fun, connect with one another, and create memories that they hopefully keep together.
