My students all come from low income urban environments. Prior to being referred to my classroom, many were considered incapable of learning to read. My classroom is a temporary setting where they can focus on improving their reading, writing, and math abilities. Especially at the beginning of the year, my students have very low self esteem and a negative self image because of their poor academic performance. As they improve throughout the year, their confidence levels skyrocket and It feels like I have a whole new set of students.
