See what Mrs. Reeves is requestingMy students need a composter, compost thermometer, compost starter, compost bags and a book on composting to help make our garden 100% environment-friendly. This would include the composter, composting bags, and accessories, along with a book about composting to introduce it to them.

I teach at a Title I school in Memphis, Tennessee, and 95% of my students live below the poverty line. I open my introduction to my students using those statistics because while my students have many barriers in their lives, they are incredible kids.
The students in the Garden Club are not only hard workers in the classroom, but are also dedicated learners and growers in the school's learning garden.
I have led the school's garden club for the past four years, and some of my students have been involved since the very beginning. It is amazing to see not only their knowledge and interest in science and gardening grow, but also see their self-confidence radiate. To them being a "Master Gardener" in the school's learning garden is something to be proud of, and also something that they have taken ownership over.
With my school's learning garden coming in its fourth year of being, I am trying to think up ideas of new ways for my students to engage with the garden. I have heard several times from each of my students how much they love harvesting the food we grow, but they hate having to throw away the parts of the harvest that isn't deemed eatable. Enter composting. We need a composter, compost thermometer, compost starter, compost bags and a book on composting to help make our garden 100% environment friendly.
I believe as a garden educator my job is to grow and strengthen my student's minds and their love for gardening.
With your donation, my garden club can increase their understanding of how to reduce and reuse things in the garden. The Mantis Compost Bin will allow for my students to place left over scraps from our garden and compost them instead of throwing them in the trash. The compost bags, thermometer and gallon bin will aid my students in composting raw material, along with being able to run scientific experiments on the lengths and types of composting. I also included a book on composting to both introduce composting to my students, and include literacy in the learning experience. My future goal is for our use of composting in the garden to spark an interest on a bigger scale and encourage our school to compost food scraps from the cafeteria.
