My students come from a high poverty area where they seek to become agents of change in America.
My students are avid readers, who like to talk about current issues, and find resolutions of what they can do in the future to improve our society.
My students are problem solvers, who use interdisciplinary essays in English and government, to propose change and reflect on what can be done to make the world better.
Providing my students the opportunity to read The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas will give them a chance to look at who they are, and who they let the world think they are.
It will give us the opportunity to discuss the importance of being an active citizen and having a voice in society.
It will deal with real world issues that our country faces, and my students as future leaders, will be able to come up with solutions that will improve American society. This book is a chance for students to see how the main character Star deals with her life at school and her life at home--and how those worlds require her to be different people. And how to be truly happy, one must find harmony with one's identity.
