This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
These are my AP English Literature students. I teach the only section of AP Literature at our high school, and I've been looking to get class sets of novels to teach.
My students are great to discuss literature and ideas with, and it has been wonderful to see so many of them really take to some of the works and concepts we've discussed.
I would love to be able to share some of the novels that have inspired me and made me think critically and deeply over the years.
My Project
I'm seeking to obtain enough copies of these three short novels for each senior in my AP English Literature class to get a copy. At the present moment, I'm facing a lack of class sets of novels, and I would particularly like to read these works as a whole class.
I feel that these works, taken together, provide a great glimpse into some of the strands of American literature over the past 90 years or so.
They have the advantage of all being on the short side and yet all probing some deeper ideas and themes from diverse perspectives. Perhaps through reading them together, the people and places present in the texts might give us some picture of what the 'American novel' is, or even what 'America' is.
