My Students

The teenagers in my classroom come to school with a wide variety of life experiences and personal interests. Some students are the children of immigrants or are immigrants themselves. Some are the children of highly educated parents while other's families work in the oilfields or service industries. Not only do my students come from different socioeconomic backgrounds, but they represent many different cultures. Of course COVID was a universal experience in our community, but individual students were affected differently. The transition back to campus has been difficult for all students, regardless of background. Many students are struggling to make meaningful personal connections and to maintain a positive and hard-working approach to their learning.

Overall, my students are resilient and intelligent, but they need a little more support from adults than they have in the past.

My Project

I believe in building a classroom culture of reading. In order to this I need a wide variety of classroom texts. The books in this project range from graphic novels to novels in a series; all are chosen with my students' interests in mind. Teenagers are very motivated by social connections. For this reason I included multiple copies of the same text. Students love reading books with a friend.

After the pandemic, students need a break from the distraction of screens and instead they need time with a quiet text.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
