Knowing the names and locations of all 50 states is an essential, but often overlooked, skill for newcomers to the United States. The games I have selected will help my students with phonemic awareness and phonics (a skill that basic curricula does not cover). Additionally, many students new to the US struggle with geography. They have not attended elementary school in this country, so they missed learning the states and capitals that most students learn in fifth grade. The kids in my class are bright and motivated. Never again will they sit in history class wondering who the heck Ohio is!
