My students need an adventure. They need to see how a book can enthrall them just as well as a movie or their favorite video game. My students need The Hunger Games.
In a middle school classroom, it is a challenge to find a novel that will appeal to both the boys and girls in the class.
My students are not unwilling to read, but most of them have never had anyone to show them books that will peak their interest.
Unfortunately, the novel collection at my school does not serve that purpose. It's full of outdated and uninteresting books that put even an avid reader like myself to sleep. How do I sell reluctant readers a book that I don't even like when my whole goal is teach them to love literature as much as I do? That's where I hope you can help.
My Project
I am asking for a class set of Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games. If you're unfamiliar with the title, it is an amazing book - the kind you read during every spare second you have, while eating meals, sacrificing sleep because you absolutely need to know what's going to happen next. It takes place in a futuristic society where a controlling government forces each of its Districts to send two tributes to compete in the annual Hunger Games - a competition where the winner is the only one left alive. Sound exciting? It is!
The action and futuristic society in this book will appeal to the boys in my classes. The lead character, Katniss Everdeen, is a strong, take-charge female. She is a role model that will appeal to the girls in my classes.
Having this book in my classroom would be the perfect way to bridge that gap between what boys like to read and what girls like to read, helping me to foster a love of literature with all of my students.
Plus, the discussions we could have about government control would pair nicely with the content my students study in social studies.
I devoured The Hunger Games, and I salivate at the thought of the discussions I can have with my students over this book.
