My students come from many different countries and cultures; many of whom live in poverty. In this first year of middle school, five elementary schools have merged so that children have had to learn to make new friends, accept and embrace differences and new personalities; all while navigating more rigorous academic demands.
Diversity is our strength at Hillside Middle School, with students cooperating and reaching out to support each other every day.
This is the only opportunity most of these children will have.
Going out into the world to experience science is the best way for students to use what they have learned in the classroom and see how it is truly connected to real life.
The opportunity to feel the drop of a roller coaster or the sensation of spinning in the teacups or Turkish Twist and to know HOW and WHY it occurs means more than weeks spent in the classroom.
Students, some of whom have never been to an amusement park, will remember this celebration of what they have learned in their first year of middle school for a lifetime.
