Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have just arrived in the United States from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador. Many have left loved ones behind and faced dangers along the way to the US. Their new school is a Title I school in Houston, Texas where 94% of their fellow classmates are economically disadvantaged.

Despite the proverbial deck being stacked against them, my students are happy to be in the US, excited to learn English, and are looking forward to high school and college.

Every day, I am grateful for the chance to teach these unique children and watch them grow into successful young ladies and gentlemen.

My Project

I am using AKJ Education again for my leveled nonfiction guided reading books. This company has numerous titles for each level, so I am able to choose books I know my students will love. These books have interesting topics and vibrant photos that simply draw you in.

Being in 8th grade and reading at a first grade level is frustrating.

Pair that with your reading lessons in "baby" books, and you turn frustration into embarrassment. My middle school students are new to the country and reading English, and they come to me with varying degrees of education. Guided reading is the perfect answer to meet each individual student where they are in their acquisition of English. The fact that these nonfiction books have science and social studies content, only helps my students succeed in their other classes too.
