As a Pre-K Headstart teacher in West Philadelphia, all of my students come from low income families. Some have more support at home than others. Some students are read to every night and their parents hold conversations with them often. However, many of our students do not experience a story before bed each night or a shelf filled with books at home. Many do not have the opportunities to express their thoughts and ideas on a regular basis. Our program strives to provide students with as many opportunities every day to express themselves, their creativity, and a love for learning.
About half of our students are English Language Learners, as well.
We work with these students to help improve communication skills through large and small group activities, read alouds, and center activities (including dramatic play). The goal is for all students to feel comfortable being themselves. We want everyone to feel a sense of pride in who they are and where they come from.
Many of the students who attend Headstart participate in the program for 2 years before going to kindergarten. Next year, I will have 8 returning students. Most of these students already recognize the letters they of the alphabet and many also can name the sounds each makes. As a result, we need to find different ways to challenge the students who are ready to start reading. One strategy we hope to implement this year entails sending guided reading books home as part of our lending library (for the students who are ready). Students will take a few of the books home on a Monday and practice reading them throughout the week. On Friday, students will have the opportunity to read one of their guided reading books to classmates in small or large group settings. We want to help foster a love for reading, as well as confidence in their abilities as emergent readers. Obtain these materials, will also is to implement this idea to help set our students up for success!
