My Project

As a 7th grade ELA teacher, I have the privilege of watching students discover who they are through literature. Every year, one of the most exciting opportunities for our students is participating in Battle of the Books. This program inspires students to read beyond the classroom, work collaboratively, strengthen comprehension skills, and develop a genuine love for reading.

For many students, Battle of the Books is more than a reading competition: it becomes a safe place where they feel connected, valued, and confident.

At our school, approximately 63% of students come from low-income households. While our school community is incredibly resilient and hardworking, access to books outside of school can be limited for many families. Providing these novels would ensure that every interested student has an equal opportunity to participate, regardless of financial circumstances.

Students who may struggle academically often find success and pride through reading teams and collaborative discussions. The program encourages critical thinking, teamwork, perseverance, and accountability—skills that extend far beyond the classroom.

The requested books will allow students to:

Read and discuss high-quality literature independently and collaboratively

Build reading stamina and comprehension skills aligned with grade-level standards

Strengthen vocabulary and analytical thinking

Develop confidence through academic competition and teamwork

Experience the joy of reading in a meaningful and engaging way

These novels will be used throughout the school year for team practices, discussions, and preparation for competition, impacting not only current students but future Battle of the Books participants as well. Every donation, no matter the size, helps create opportunities for students to grow as readers and leaders. Thank you for considering support for our classroom and for helping our students experience the power of literature, teamwork, and academic success.
