Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Every morning I start our day off with lessons on empathy. I want my students to think about about others, not just themselves. I use stories, websites, books and volunteering to help achieve this. It is my hope that students will leave 5th grade being more understanding and caring of others.

I work at an independent charter school.

We focus on career and college. I feel blessed to work at a school where we really focus as a team on how we can help our students. I make an effort to visit the homes of each student, so that home and school are partners. Our school focus is inner-city children. We have an extended school day and school year. All students and staff participate in three weeks of summer school. We work on character building through all school activities. One of my favorite character building activities is reading buddies. We buddy up with a grade level lower than ours to read to them.

My Project

My students will use the books provided during their guided reading time. Students will be in small groups and each group will have a book they are using. Many of the books I have chosen are topics covered in their Social Studies and Science classes. I want students to have materials they are interested in - books that will pique their interest. I am always on the lookout for new books and authors I can introduce to my students. Students will use these books as a starting point in discussions. They will also use these as they work in their reading logs, to locate such things as similes, metaphors and other figurative language.

The donations that are given for this project will assist my students in reading quality stories.

It will provide them reading material on topics they may be interested in. It will provide a starting point for deeper discussion.
