I work with students who come from various backgrounds, many of whom are English Language Learners from low income families who have a drive to learn. These students are friendly and love to be engaged and immersed in the English language and our school culture.
Many of my students have limited access to opportunities due to family structure and responsibilities.
Many of them are beginning a new life in this country and deal with isolation, transition, and adjustment to the expectations of a new culture and school system.
My students are English language learners and they are hungry for good young adult literature. Because of their English levels, most of them have not read an actual book in English before. They were only exposed to their text books or photocopied short texts.
These real books will help them improve their English skills while they discover many aspects of their identity and grow intellectually.
I am planning to use some of these books as teaching materials. Others will take their place in our ESL classroom library for each student to read independently. Each student is expected to read a book each month and facilitate a book discussion in class.
