Reading Without Pressure -- Stocking the Shelves for SSR

Help me give my students access to new, high-interest novels that are available to them right in the classroom. No more library fines or browsing aimlessly -- now great books are right in our room.

My Students

My students are aspiring college students. As sophomores in high school, they are working through an accelerated curriculum in order to prepare for two years of dual credit opportunities in high school. However, the largest obstacle for many of these students is their reading level and interest.

While my students are compliant learners, many struggle to read assigned texts because they do not have the reading stamina, nor do they have an interest in reading.

SSR is a regular part of our class; however, the book choices I can offer students are not the newest releases, nor do I have books for every interest level. It's important that every student feel they can see themselves reflected in characters of the books they read, and I would like to increase the diversity of my classroom library to make this a reality, along with adding other high-interest, new releases.

I am seeking additional funds to order the newest, most popular Young Adult literature and non-fiction texts to help students develop a love of reading, a skill I know will enable them to reach their ultimate goal: college.

My Project

Students need to remember that reading used to be fun. So many of my students say they used to love reading. They went to the library in elementary school, and they poured over the Scholastic Book Order forms. But, somewhere along the way -- thanks to cell phones, Netflix and TikTok -- they lost their passion for reading.

I'm seeking to help reignite that passion for reading by stocking my classroom library shelves with new, high-interest text that students will want to read.

From books about the historical topics we will be covering, such as the Cold War or World War II, to books that have been made into popular streaming series, like Karen McManus's One of Us is Lying, this collection of books has something for every student in my room.
