Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A typical day in my classroom includes teaching English vocabulary and fluency in reading English. I would like for my students to have access to audio books to provide a fluent, expressive model of English language. My students need to hear expressive reading from other sources besides me.
My students are 7 to 9 years old, in the 2nd grade at an inner city school.
We are 100% free and reduced price lunches and most of our students are native Spanish speakers.
My students are eager to learn to read and speak in English, but they receive very little support at home. I must be their support system as they learn English.
My school is severely lacking in emergent reading materials and does not possess any audiobooks.
My Project
My students will use these materials in their Daily Reading Rotation. After students listen and read along with the books, students will come to the teacher table where we will have a "book study" and discuss what was read. Through this, I will build comprehension strategies, address vocabulary deficits, explain common phrases found in the material and begin writing book reviews. Students will not only strengthen their English language skills, they will begin to develop writing skills and increase their reading comprehension. Many students struggle with reading, yet they love to listen to stories. By eliminating some of the stress of reading, students will be able to develop a love of books. I want to make reading enjoyable- not a dreaded chore.
Many of my students do not get exposure to technology except at school.
Our school's technology resources are out-of-date and do not support current trends in teaching- including the use of audiobooks on MP3 players to strengthen reading and language skills. This project will change students' lives by easing some of the stress of learning to read and speak in English. The narrators of the audiobooks will provide an expressive and fluent model for students to emulate and enjoy.
