I teach in a high poverty, urban area. Most of my students do not own children's books, let alone a book. Our school library is terribly limited in the lower reading level/emergent reading level books my students need to learn to read. Despite all of these obstacles, my students are bright and eager to learn. Most of my students are learning to speak, read and write in English. Parents are supportive of our efforts in the classroom, but they are unable to help their student due to the language barrier. It is my goal to provide fluent, English reading models through the use of recorded books on CD and MP3 players. Listening to books while reading along relieves some of the stress of struggling readers, promotes a love of reading and strengthens comprehension.
