Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 2nd grade students reside in the low-income, urban community of South Providence.
My class consists of English Language Learners; all who are classified as a "newcomer", and recently immigrated to the United States.
My ELL students are beginning to develop basic communication skills in English: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
All of my students are from low income households, and participate in the free lunch program. In addition, many of these children have experienced trauma and have difficult home lives. However, despite these challenges, they come to school every day, eager, and willing to learn.
My Project
My students are currently beginning to develop their reading skills in English. One of the first steps in learning to read is developing a strong awareness of phonemes in language – phonemic awareness. My students have limited English proficiency, which makes the distinguishing and learning of phonemes significantly more difficult than the typical student.
¨Lively Letters” will give my students an engaging, multi-sensory experience to assist in their learning of phonics.
This program is a multi-sensory based program; meaning it integrates visual, tactile, auditory, and kinesthetic means to enhance a student's understanding, memory, and ability to learn. The Lively Letters program would give my studentś more than one way to make connections to a letter and a phoneme. Overall this program will improve my students' skills in phonemic awareness, phonics, and speech production.
