Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school saying is, "Better today than yesterday! Better tomorrow than today!" I want to make their tomorrow better!
My class consists of a diverse group of learners.
My class has 26 second grade students of varying abilities. The socio-economic background of our students is reflected by our 97% free and reduced-price lunch rate.
I teach in an urban inner city school rich with diversity. Most of my students need additional learning materials to meet grade level expectations. Please help me to make tomorrow better for them!
My Project
My students are enthusiastic learners! They enjoy learning about the world around them. As a child I loved grabbing a book and finding a quiet corner to read. My mom would drop me off at the public library every Saturday afternoon so I could spend hours looking and reading books. I have always loved to read!
Having exciting chapter books available for my students to read will unlock their imagination!
Having the Magic School Bus chapter books in my classroom library will allow my students to choose exciting adventures to read. The Magic School Bus series has exciting science topics that also teach scientific content to the reader. My students will gain knowledge about twisters, bats, sharks, skeletal systems, germs, electricity, whales, volcanoes and more while also gaining fluency skills while reading.
Having Arthur series chapter books by Marc Brown available to my students will be exciting and engaging. This series has a set group of characters that my students will enjoy following from one adventure to another. Having a series available helps your struggling readers to learn comprehension skills. My students will be able to know about the characters before reading the next story. They will be able to focus on the events in the story and the problem and solution. This will help to build their comprehension skills which will lend to increasing fluency skills.
I chose these books in groups of 6 so I could have them for a group of students to read and then discuss in a literature circle. I enjoy listening to my students taped sessions in literature circles.
Thank you for considering our book project! I'd love to instill a love for reading in my students. I'd love to send them off to third grade as life long readers and thinkers!
