My Project

Okay fellow reading rockstars...

You have a chance to help inspire some life-long readers in our students.

A lot of students come to our 10th grade classroom with the idea that their reading identities are fixed. That they cannot be changed. It is a micro version of a mentality that we challenge at individual and systemic levels in our Black Studies class. Help me give my students reading journal materials! Notebooks, pens & pencils, highlighters, post-its, pouches, reading strips, stickers, bookmarks you can color, and more!

In the same way that we trace back the lineage of a culture or an idea to better understand what we know today, we also encourage our students to trace their mindsets back to specific experiences so that they understand why they believe what they do about themselves as readers. It empowers them to take ownership over their reading identities and create reading habits that also include future goals and plans, not just past experiences.

This framework of SANKOFA, or going back to get information from the past to better understand your current context in active hope of creating a better future, is the glue for everything we do in our Black Studies class. We are the change we wish to see in the world, and reading regularly is one of the main pathways to envisioning and acting towards that better future!
