The only thing lacking here is funding. \r\n\r\nI've been using the same set of graphing calculators for over ten years and many of the calculators are starting to malfunction and the symbols on the keys are rubbed off. There is no funding to replace this necessary piece of technology at our school and our students do not have the resources to purchase their own. We need this resource so that all students have an opportunity to explore in math and succeed in this course and beyond. Additionally, this assignment facilitated opportunities for students to have deeper and more meaningful conversations with their peers.\r\n\r\nSome of the highlights of this work included students who initially found the assignment redundant or uninteresting. However, witnessing their growth through self-discovery reaffirmed that this was the right step forward. Because of you, we were able to provide 60 copies of Othello and 50 copies of Things Fall Apart, which will benefit over 160 students this school year. \r\n\r\nWhen I taught Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe in November and December, students read the book and used it to analyze characters, setting, theme, and plot. They further used these to compose literary essays that helped them practice their analytical skills, as well as utilize their newly-acquired grammar knowledge. Many students have reported to me that this assignment has helped them become better writers who think about the craft differently because of the rich complexities that Achebe's book lends to readers. These books will enable students to continue reading Achebe's book for years to come, as these copies are much more robust and newer than the 15-year copies that were (literally) falling apart that we had before. \r\n\r\nLater this Spring, the focus will shift to reading Othello by William Shakespeare. Already students have been asking me lots of questions about the upcoming unit, which will test students' analytical skills and interpretation of Shakespeare as they compete with each other in a mock trial. It's one of the most anticipated units of the year--and this year's trials will prove to be memorable thanks to your generous support. Also, some of my students lost their journal and I was able to give them an extra one as well. It is very cool to see such a small practice make such a big impact. Tenth grade developmentally is an age where students begin to expand their sense of self beyond their household and even their neighborhood communities. They are participating in more extracurricular activities that bring them into other communities and engaging in professional opportunities that catapult them into other parts of the world where adults hold the reigns. It's important that they have a place they feel brave enough to ask hard questions about what they're seeing happening around them. The texts in our classroom library allow us to do that and to trace back what has happened before that has led us to where we are now and what we're seeing happening in real time. \r\n\r\nThe broad selection of texts that your support provided has also ensured that these students, and any others that come through my classroom, have texts that are accessible because they span from elementary age in skill all the way up to college level and beyond, and they are varied in style with some being short stories, some poems, some autobiographies, some are anthologies, some are fiction, some are non-fiction. This type of variety is so essential to have for students who have a difficult history and relationship with reading. Especially after the pandemic impacts. This wide array of texts provides so many different entry points for students to be able to find something that they can connect to. \r\n\r\nWhen students are able to connect to a text, the work of reading skills becomes less of a barrier. They can focus on tracking things like the overall arc of a story and what function the setting serves in anchoring that arc; noticing themes and symbols and how those evolve throughout a text; and how a character develops and changes over the course of a text. All of these skills and more ultimately translate to stronger readers who bring that confidence into continued reading and writing as well.
