My classes are always bursting at the seams (sometimes enrolled beyond capacity) as students are hungry for hands-on opportunities to express themselves through art.\r\n\r\nWith over 400 students per year and no designated art budget, finding sufficient materials is always a struggle. I cannot thank you enough for your donation to our program and I'd love to share some images of the projects your generosity made possible.\r\n\r\nWe used *both sides!* of the linocut blocks for our wildly popular printmaking unit in which students carved an image that represents a hidden aspect of their personality. We were able to stretch the printing inks and use them for an additional 3-color monoprint exercise using recycled cereal boxes. We use the X-Acto blades constantly, most recently to create beautiful notan collages and cardboard sculptures. In the pictures you can see just SOME of the snacks i was able to remember to snap pictures of. \r\n\r\nStudents were so hype to see numerous boxes of snacks arrive, they requested an unboxing and were able to share how grateful they were to know that people want them to be cared for while they work to deepen their understanding of themselves and their communities. In one picture you might notice the amazing signs that Ray helped me out with based on the hand lettering of signs found in the Philippines and Latinoamérica.\r\n\r\nY'all really came through in helping our room feel special. We have explored the effects of forces on acceleration, and relationships between velocity and gravitational potential energy and elastic potential energy since receiving the sensors. I am excited for students to continue using the sensors to investigate topics such as momentum and simple harmonic motion. \r\n\r\nStudents were amazed at the quality of the graphs obtained during the first lab activity in which we used the new motion sensors. Each time we used the old sensors, students wasted so much time troubleshooting the equipment, having to switch out cables or sensors or interfaces just to get reasonable graphs. And even then, it was hard for students to draw conclusions from data when they weren't sure the data were reliable. Thank you so much for helping to remove this barrier to learning. These plug-and-play motion sensors have greatly simplified the setup for students and have made exploring concepts much more accessible and less frustrating. The first book group we hosted was for A Good Girls Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson. So many students were interested that we ran out of books and had to borrow additional from other high schools. Student leaders led conversations and had a jeopardy style quiz available for the last book group session. \r\n\r\nOur current book group is 1984 by George Orwell. This is a smaller group of seven students who have spent most of our book group time comparing and contrasting this book and the world they live in now. It has provided a great opportunity for students to share benefits and concerns of technology in our life and many other topics. Students and I are looking forward to the last session on Thursday the 18th.\r\n\r\nHopefully we'll be prepared to start another book group in January or February. The only thing lacking here is funding. \r\n\r\nI've been using the same set of graphing calculators for over ten years and many of the calculators are starting to malfunction and the symbols on the keys are rubbed off. There is no funding to replace this necessary piece of technology at our school and our students do not have the resources to purchase their own. We need this resource so that all students have an opportunity to explore in math and succeed in this course and beyond.
