This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Reading is fundamental, but it can be so much more than that. For many kids it is a gateway to other worlds, a distraction from a stressful day, and a great learning tool. In addition, reading out loud can help students overcome shyness and a fear of public speaking.

This is why I strive to show my students how fun and important reading is.

We read every day in whole group, small group, and we also have independent reading. My students love to read to the character plushies I have in the classroom. Unfortunately, I don't have enough for all the students, which leads to fights.

With all of this in mind I have a plan and need your help!! I want to have a puppy (plushie) adoption event for my students!! I will get enough puppy plushies for each student, with collars, and a bed/bag for each puppy. Then each student can “adopt” a puppy as their reading buddy for the year.

Their puppy will not only make reading more fun and engaging in the classroom, it will help them practice reading out loud at home. I always stress to my students how important it is to practice reading at home daily with a parent or family member. However, some students don't have that opportunity because their parents are working and don't have time. Having a puppy reading buddy will help them practice and serve to make them feel comfortable and safe.
