Reading Opens Us to a World of Beautiful Possibilities!

My students need big books for large group reading experiences, and a listening center with read along books to savor as they take off in reading and create their dreams.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Anyone who's ever witnessed that moment when reading suddenly clicks for a child knows that there's nothing quite like it. Reading truly opens the door to a world of possibilities! For some students it comes easily, for others, it requires innovative approaches, but every child can read!

This school, a new public charter is bringing a quality Montessori education to this economically and culturally diverse community.

As a public charter without the benefit of private school funding sources, this school is striving to provide an excellent education to it’s students. My class is a fantastic group of eager 1st through 3 grade children, many of whom have special learning needs. With three grade levels in one class, there are a range of learning styles and reading levels. One thing I'd like to share with you, that really touched my heart last year, was that the sense of entitlement I had experienced in well-funded private schools over the years had been replaced by an authentic spirit of such gratitude. Last year I borrowed sets of books, big books, and reader's theater scripts for my students-nothing went unread. That ate them up! I'd look around and often see that they had created self-formed books groups and there was such a spirit of joy and caring as they read.

My Project

To help meet the needs of my diverse and multi-aged group, I am requesting materials that will allow our students to participate in a variety of reading opportunities. I've learned over my years of teaching that children have different ways of learning, some that are supported by reading together, some by reading independently, and all by being read to. This project will create: shared reading experiences using the big books which we will read together as a class and use for learning language concept and writing skills, a listening center to help develop my students' listening skills, and sets of books for guided reading "literacy group" experiences. The children will be learning how to discuss books as a group and using them in their writing. This is an amazing school. As a public charter, the funding is limited but the commitment and heart is not. Without a doubt, these resources will help create a rich and varied approach to literacy development in our classroom.

Very simply put, one of my greatest teaching joys is facilitating children learning to read.

My commitment at this school is to create an outstanding classroom in which Literacy is the very foundation of our learning and every child becomes a reader. This project is designed to bring various reading resources to these deserving students and to create a passion for reading that lasts their entire lifetime. A whole world of possibility opens to a child who reads. I've seen it year after year!
